Ramdev Baba’s Patanjali Yogpeeth Trust was struck down by the Supreme Court on Friday. The court upheld the judgment of the appellate tribunal and ordered the trust to pay service tax on the entry fee charged for conducting yoga camps.
A bench of Justice Abhay S Oka and Justice Ujjwal Bhuyan declined to interfere with the Allahabad bench’s judgment dated 5 October 2023. Therefore, Ramdev Baba’s Patanjali Trust will now have to pay a tax of Rs 4.5 crore.
CESTAT in its order said that residential and non-residential yoga camps are organized on behalf of Patanjali Yogpeeth Trust. Fees are charged for these camps. Their services fall under this category, health and fitness services. Hence service tax is applicable on it. This trust of Ramdev Baba and his colleague Acharya Balkrishna organizes yoga camps at various places.
