Before 1582 the New Year began in the spring of March, when the Roman calendar had 10 months. Roman King Numa Pompilus changed the Roman calendar. After the eighth century BC, King Numa Pompilus added the months of January and February. The trend of celebrating the New Year on January 1 started after the introduction of the Gregorian calendar in 1582.

Gregorian calendar based on solar cycle

Roman ruler Julius Caesar changed the calendar. After this, Caesar himself announced the start of the new year from January 1. Earth revolves around the sun for 365 days and 6 hours. In such a case when the months of January and February were added, it did not match the calculation of the sun, then astronomers studied it in depth.

Any calendar is based on the calculation of solar cycle or lunar cycle. A calendar based on the lunar cycle has 354 days. At the same time, a calendar based on the solar cycle has 365 days. The Gregorian calendar is based on the solar cycle. This calendar is used in most countries.

New Year according to Hebrew culture

According to Hebrew belief, God took seven days to create the world. After these seven days of meditation, the New Year is celebrated. According to the Gregorian calendar, this day falls between 5th September and 5th October.

So, the Hindu New Year starts every year from Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, i.e. Gudi Padwa.
