E-commerce Policy: Central government will soon implement e-commerce policy in the country. This e-commerce policy will have an impact on consumers and retailers. The Prime Minister’s Office is examining the National E-Commerce Policy to understand its potential impact on retailers and small businesses.

The policy formulated by the Union Commerce Ministry will reduce the restrictions on online selling companies like Amazon, Flipkart. This is expected.

Two people familiar with the matter told Mint news agency that the policy is in the final stages and will be announced soon after approval by the PMO. The much awaited policy will protect the interests of both consumers and industry.

The e-commerce policy is highly controversial and experts are concerned that the policy is facing resistance from traditional retailers. Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) general secretary Praveen Khandelwal said, “In the current economic climate, there is uneven competition in the e-commerce sector, which is hurting small businesses.

Over the years, offline sellers have been resisting discounts offered by e-commerce companies. Therefore, they say that their sales are continuously decreasing.

What might the new e-commerce strategy entail?

The new e-commerce policy will not allow selling items below cost. All e-commerce companies will be required to register with the government.

Customers can file complaints against them which will be resolved promptly. The e-commerce platform will have complete information about all sellers. Such provisions are likely to be in this policy.

All companies selling goods using digital technology can be brought under the ambit of e-commerce policy. The e-commerce policy has been in the works for the last three years, but it has not been announced yet.
