Covishield Vaccine : In 2022, a survey by Lancet Global Health showed that AstraZeneca caused 8.1 TTS cases per million among people who received the first dose. The rate dropped to 2.3 per million among those taking the second dose
Covishield Vaccine
Corona vaccine and its side effects were widely discussed everywhere, but now Oxford-AstraZeneca has admitted itself about Corona vaccine. Global vaccine maker AstraZeneca has admitted that a Covid-19 vaccine developed by Oxford University researchers is likely to cause rare diseases such as blood clotting and low platelets. About 175 crore doses of this vaccine have been administered to the people of India. In such a situation, the question arises whether people taking this vaccine in India need to worry. In this regard, comforting information has come out in the report of experts.
According to The Daily Telegraph, AstraZeneca has admitted thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS) as a side effect in court. In fact, a lawsuit has been filed against the company alleging serious harm and death after vaccination. This is the first time the company has admitted this in court. When the first cases of TTS were reported in Europe, some countries stopped using the AstraZeneca vaccine.
A survey by Lancet Global Health in 2022 showed that AstraZeneca caused 8.1 TTS cases per million among people who received the first dose. Among those who took the second dose, the number dropped to 2.3 per million. Surveys have shown that the incidence of TTS varies across countries. The highest number of cases are from Nordic countries (17.6 per million doses) and the lowest from Asian countries (0.2 per million doses). The news about this has been given by the English newspaper Indian Express.
Why people of India need not worry?
In India, a government committee was set up to look at the side effects of the corona vaccine in people. This committee investigated at least 37 cases related to TTS. Eighteen of these cases are related to people who received the vaccine before 2021. Experts say TTS was reported early in the epidemic in European countries but was very rare in India.
TTS is a very rare side effect of the vaccine, says a senior health ministry official who was part of the discussion on the vaccination campaign. It is still rarer in Indians and South Asians than in Europeans. There is ample evidence that vaccines have saved lives. In this case its advantages are much greater than TTS cases.
The next few weeks after vaccination are important
According to the official, most TTS-related cases are reported within a few weeks of the first dose. Most Indians have already had three vaccines and it has been a long time. Dr. Gagandeep Kang, Global Health Director of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and a member of WHO’s Safety Advisory Committee for Covid-19 Vaccines, said it is most important to reassure people that there is a risk of TTS immediately after vaccination. Everyone in India has been vaccinated for a long time.
