Electricity in India Update
The Central Government is trying to provide power supply 24×7 smooth electricity supply across the country and for this the Union Ministry of Power has taken the initiative. Power distribution system is being enabled especially in rural and remote areas. For this, Union Minister of State for Energy Shripad Naik informed in the Rajya Sabha that the power generation capacity of the country will be increased by 3.37 lakh MW by 2032.
The central government has taken up various schemes for smooth power supply in the country. 1.85 lakh crore was spent through Deen Dayal Upadhyay Gram Jyoti Yojana, Integrated Energy Development Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana. From it, 18,374 villages were electrified, while electricity was delivered to 2.86 crore houses. After that, the central government is now emphasizing on increasing the power generation capacity to provide 24X7 uninterrupted power supply across the country.
With an addition of 2.14 lakh MW in the power generation capacity of the country in the last ten years, the total power generation capacity of the country has increased to 4.46 lakh MW by June 2024. Apart from that, 1 lakh 95 thousand 181 km network was woven to strengthen the power distribution system in the last ten years.
Three thousand MW thermal projects will be set up in the state
In order to ensure uninterrupted power supply to the state, Mahanimriti is going to set up a thermal power plant of 3000 megawatts at a cost of 15 thousand crore rupees. Presently the emphasis is on renewable energy generation in the country. Hence, the thermal power and hydropower generation capacity to maintain grid frequency is relatively low. Therefore, the Center directed the states to set up 80,000 MW thermal power plants in the country. Accordingly, the officials said that the decision will be taken to set up two sets of 660 MW and the remaining 1680 MW project at Mahanirmati Koradi power station.
This power project will cost around 15 thousand crore rupees. The said fund will be raised by way of loan from Rural Electrification Corporation and Power Finance Corporation.
