This list of the world’s most polluted countries and cities is from 2024, in which Bangladesh ranks first and Pakistan ranks second.
According to this report, Begusarai in Bihar has become the most polluted city in the world for the first time. Delhi has been named as the capital city with the worst air quality this year as well. Delhi has featured in the list of most polluted cities four times since 2018. The report ‘Global Air Quality Report 2024′ lists 134 countries. Data has been collected from more than 30,000 air quality monitoring stations at 7,812 locations.
In India last year, the PM (particulate micron – particles) level of 2.5’ was 54.4 micrograms per cubic meter at an annual average rate. Bangladesh tops the list (79.9 micrograms per cubic meter) followed by Pakistan (73.7 micrograms per cubic meter). India was the eighth most polluted country in the world in 2022. At that time, the country’s ‘PM 2.5’ level was an average of 53.3 micrograms per cubic meter.
50 most polluted cities
India had 42 cities in the list of 50 most polluted cities in the world. Begusarai was the most polluted metropolis in 2024. It is followed by Guwahati and Delhi. Delhi tops the list as the capital city with the worst air quality. The top 50 most polluted cities in the world list include Greater Noida (No.11), Muzaffarnagar (16), Gurugram (17), Ara (18), Dadri (19), Patna (20), Faridabad (25), Noida (26), The cities include Meerut (28), Ghaziabad (35) and Rohtak (47).
