One millimeter thick layers of wood become about 80 to 90 percent transparent. The thicker this layer becomes, the more opaque the wood becomes.
Mobile Display made from Wood
Nowadays smartphone has become an important factor in everyone’s life. Being a screen-touch smartphone, the display is one of the most important elements in a phone. Currently, mobile screens are made of plastic and glass. However, scientists are now trying to make mobile screens out of wood.
Information about this has been given in a report of Scientific American. Research is going on in Sweden’s KTH Royal Institute of Technology. Lars Berglund of KTH and some researchers from the University of Maryland are doing this research together. Work is going on for the last several days. ABP has published a news about this.
How research was done
Researchers have developed a technique to remove a substance called lignin from wood. This gum-like substance works to transport water and nutrients from the soil throughout the plant. This is what gives the tree a brick or chocolate color. If this substance is removed, the color of the wood will disappear. The wood can then be made transparent using epoxy resin.
After such a process, one millimeter thick layer of wood becomes about 80 to 90 percent transparent. The thicker this layer becomes, the more opaque the wood becomes. In fact, researchers say even a thin layer of it is three times stronger than plastic and 10 times stronger than glass.
Not eco friendly
In the future, wooden displays can be a good alternative to plastic. However, these are certainly not environmentally friendly. The reason for this is the epoxy resin used in it. It is a substance made from petroleum, which is plastic.
