Supreme Court On Patanjali: The Supreme Court on Tuesday reprimanded Baba Ramdev’s company Patanjali Ayurveda. The court has issued a strong warning against publishing misleading claims and advertisements. The Indian Medical Association had filed a petition against misleading advertisements. The IMA cited several advertisements.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday gave a stern warning to Baba Ramdev’s company Patanjali Ayurveda. This reprimand has been issued for publishing false and misleading claims in advertisements against the modern medicine system. Indian Medical Association had filed a petition against the misleading advertisements.The Supreme Court has cautioned yoga guru Ramdev’s company Patanjali Ayurveda against making “false” and “misleading” claims in advertisements about its medicines regarding various diseases. “All such false and misleading advertisements of Patanjali Ayurved have to be stopped immediately,” a bench of Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah and Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra said in oral remarks while hearing the petition of the Indian Medical Association (IMA). The court will take any such violation very seriously…”

A notice was issued

The apex court had issued notice to the Union Health Ministry and AYUSH Ministry and Patanjali Ayurveda Limited on the IMA’s plea accusing Ramdev of campaigning against the vaccination campaign and modern medicines. During the brief hearing, the bench asked Patanjali Ayurveda not to publish misleading claims and advertisements against modern methods of medicine.The bench may also consider imposing a fine of Rs 1 crore on each product if it is falsely claimed that a particular disease can be cured, the court said.

Patanjali Claims of precision cure

The top court asked the counsel appearing for the Center to find a solution to the issue of misleading medical advertisements, where claims are being made about medicines accurately treating certain diseases. The bench will now hear IMA’s petition on February 5 next year. Issuing notice on the petition, the apex court had strongly criticized Ramdev for criticizing allopathy and allopathic practitioners and said he should be restrained from defaming doctors and other systems of treatment.

A Bench Said this

A bench headed by then Chief Justice NV Ramana had said, “What has happened to Guru Swami Ramdev Baba?…We respect him because he popularized yoga. We all do it. But, he should not criticize other systems.” The bench had said, ”What is the guarantee that Ayurveda, whatever system he is adopting, will work? You see ads where all doctors are accused as if they are murderers. Big advertisements have been given.

The IMA had cited several advertisements which allegedly misrepresented allopaths and doctors. It was also said that “defamatory” statements have also been made by companies engaged in the production of Ayurvedic medicines to mislead the general public.
