The history of pizza dates back to ancient times. This dish was first found in Egyptian and then Italian food culture. It is mentioned that this substance is being made in Italy since 97 years. Back then, this dish was prepared with oil, some spices, coriander, basil or similar leaves, and cheese on a honeycomb-like base.

Although pizza traveled to India from Egypt, Italy, there are records of the birth of the modern pizza in Naples, Italy in the 18th century by Raffaello Espiocito. A baker by profession, Raphael made world history with the pizza he fed to King Umberto I and Queen Margherita who were visiting Naples.

King Umberto and Queen Margherita visited Naples in 1889. French style meals were cooked for them every day. The king and queen were tired of eating the same food. Both of them are genuine gourmets. He ordered the officials of Naples to create a food that tasted completely new. Raphael was called to get out of this dilemma.

Raphael made three types of pizza for the king and queen. One of the pizzas was made with pork, caciocavallo and basil leaves, another with whitable fish and the third with tomatoes and mozzarella cheese.

Queen Margherita loved this third pizza. In her honor, this pizza was named Margherita Pizza, which is considered to be the most popular pizza in the world today.

Pizza has not changed much since then. The face of pizza has changed a lot in modern times. Tomatoes, pineapples, ‘steaks’, pizza sauce and rarely mayonnaise were never included in traditional pizzas. In today’s changing times, as pizza has traveled far and wide from Italy, it has evolved according to the food traditions of those places.
