Strong tremors were felt in several parts of northern India, including Delhi and its surrounding areas, Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, on Tuesday afternoon after a 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck western Nepal.

Two of the four earthquakes — the first of 4.6 magnitude and the second with a magnitude of 6.2 — occurred within a span of nearly half an hour. The origin of all the four earthquakes, stretching for an hour, were in Nepal, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).

The first earthquake was reported at 2:25 pm at a depth of 10 km while the second one occurred at 2:51 pm at a depth of 5 km, the NCS said.

Two more quakes (magnitude 3.6 and 3.1) hit the same region at a depth of 15 km and 10 km at 3:06 pm and 3:19 pm, respectively.

The Delhi Police urged residents not to panic. “We hope you all are safe. Please come out of your buildings to a safe spot, but do not panic. Do not use elevators! For any emergency help, dial 112,” it said in a post on X.

Hoogerbeets, a researcher at the Solar System Geometry Survey (SSGEOS), said atmospheric fluctuations were reported in parts of and near Pakistan. He said this was an “indicator of an upcoming stronger tremor”.
