40 thousand railway coaches will be converted into ‘Vande Bharat’: Railways have got a wonderful gift in the last budget of the second term of the Modi government.
Budget 2024 Railway
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has presented the interim budget of the country today. Railways got a wonderful gift in the last budget of the second term of the Modi government. Presenting the budget in the Lok Sabha today (Thursday), Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that 3 new railway economic corridors will be constructed in the next few years. These corridors will be for energy, minerals and cement.
This project has been introduced under Pradhan Mantri Gati Shakti Yojana. This will improve the functioning of passenger trains and make travel between trains safer. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has announced that 40 thousand ordinary trains will be converted into Vande Bharat.
How much share did railways get last year?
In the last year’s budget, the Modi government gave maximum emphasis on railways. The share of Railways was Rs 2.4 lakh crore in the total budget of Rs 45 lakh crore for 2023. During the tenure of the Modi government, the budget provision for railways has increased steadily.
5 years ago i.e. in the budget of 2019, a provision of Rs 69,967 crore was made to the Railways. Then in 2020, Rs 70,250 crore was given to Railways. A year later, i.e. in 2021, for the first time, the budget of the railways crossed the Rs 1 lakh crore mark. So in 2023 i.e. last year the budgetary allocation of railways crossed the mark of Rs 2 lakh crore for the first time.
The budget has come as a big push for Indian Railways proposing an upgrade of around 40,000 trains to Vande Bharat trains in the country.

Formed part of General Budget from 2017 onwards
A separate budget for railways was presented before the Modi government. This tradition changed from 2017 onwards. The Railway Budget was a part of the General Budget presented by the then Finance Minister Arun Jaitley that year. Before that, the railway budget was presented separately by the railway minister. For the last 7 years now, the railway budget is coming as part of the general budget.
