Election Commissioner Bill: Even though 144 MPs in Parliament have been suspended, BJP is still trying to pass the bill. Three Criminal Amendment Bills were passed in Parliament on Tuesday. After that, the central government will introduce another important bill in the Lok Sabha. The Bill regarding the appointment of Election Commission Commissioners will be tabled in the Lok Sabha today.
The central government has brought a new bill regarding the appointment of the Election Commission Commissioner. The Rajya Sabha approved the bill last week. The bill can be passed in the Lok Sabha without a hitch.
Interestingly, this bill is opposed by Congress and other parties. Due to this bill, the election commissioners will become puppets of the ruling party. As the number of opposition in the Lok Sabha is now nominal, the bill will be easily passed.
What is the new bill?
According to the new bill, the Election Commission will include the Prime Minister, a Union Cabinet Minister and the Leader of the Opposition in the selection committee. The Supreme Court recently in a decision directed the central government to constitute a committee while appointing the Election Commissioner.
According to the directions of the Supreme Court, while appointing the Election Commissioner, it was said that the Prime Minister, the Chief Justice of India and the Leader of the Opposition will be included in this committee. But the Modi government has decided to change it by bringing a bill in this regard.
Now the decision to exclude the Chief Justice from this committee has been taken by the Modi government. Therefore, the amended bill will be tabled in Parliament today. The three-member committee will include the Prime Minister, a Union Cabinet minister from the ruling party. Therefore, it is clear that the ruling party is decisive in the appointment of Election Commissioner. It is doubtful whether the Election Commissioner, chosen by the ruling party, can take a neutral decision.
