What is CAA and its controversy?
The Citizenship Amendment Bill was passed in Parliament on 11 December 2019. The purpose of this is that minorities like Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis, Christians who have come to India as refugees due to religious injustice and persecution in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh will be given Indian citizenship.
Muslims are not included in this, so a big controversy arose from this. Opponents alleged that the Act violates the principle of equality under Article 14 of the Constitution. More than 200 PILs were filed against this Act.
What is the rule of CAA?
CAA itself does not grant citizenship to anyone. The Act applies to people who have entered India as refugees from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh on or before December 31, 2014.
These citizens have to prove that they have been living in India since this time. They are victims of religious persecution, they speak the language of that country. Also, the provisions of the Third Schedule of the Citizenship Act, 1955 will also be applicable to them. Only then those passengers will be eligible to apply.
