Tax Evasion: GST evasion to the tune of Rs 44,015 crore has been detected in the anti-tax evasion probe launched by the GST authorities from May 2023. Apart from this, a total of 29,273 fake companies have also been detected across the country.

GST evasion of Rs 44,015 crore has been detected in the anti-tax evasion investigation drive launched by the GST authorities from May 2023. Apart from this, a total of 29,273 fake companies have also been found across the country. At the same time, 121 people have been arrested in the case of tax evasion.
According to the finance ministry, 4,153 bogus companies were detected during the October-December quarter, evading taxes worth around Rs 12,036 crore. Central GST authorities have traced 2,358 of these fake companies. Most of them 926 companies were found in Maharashtra, followed by 507 in Rajasthan, 483 in Delhi and 424 such companies in Haryana.
According to the ministry, 41 people have been arrested in these cases. 31 of them have been arrested by the Central GST officials. During the October-December quarter, the campaign has managed to save Rs 1,317 crore in revenue. Out of which Rs 319 crore was recovered.
The ministry said that the government has taken several measures to secure the GST registration process. The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs or CBIC Board is conducting a nationwide drive against non-existent/fake registrants.
It is being used to curb fraud in GST. Some fake companies have been found evading taxes by issuing fake invoices without basic supply of goods and services.

According to the finance ministry, in the December quarter, 926 shell companies in Maharashtra have evaded taxes worth Rs 2,201 crore. 11 people were arrested during this operation. 483 bogus companies in Delhi are suspected of evading taxes worth Rs 3,028 crore. 11 people have been arrested here too.
