Now cold and cough medicines will be available in grocery stores, central government preparing to implement OTC policy?

Grocery store

The central government is preparing to take a big decision soon. Medicines used for cold, cough and fever are now being made available for sale in grocery stores as well. The central government is preparing to come up with a policy for OTC i.e. over the counter medicines. A committee has been constituted for this purpose and consideration is going on.

What is the OTC policy?

OTC means over the counter drugs that can be sold without a doctor’s prescription. This policy has already been implemented in countries like the US, UK and Australia. Now preparations for its implementation in India have started. This committee is working in this direction. This committee has made many suggestions so far.

Why is this policy being introduced?

According to reports, the government is preparing to roll out this policy keeping rural areas in mind. There is a shortage of doctors in rural areas. Apart from this, medical stores are also less available in rural areas. In such a situation, many times people do not even get the necessary medicines. In many cases, patients’ condition worsens due to non-availability of required medicines on time. For this, the committee has given instructions regarding OTC.

When was the committee formed?

In February this year, Director General of Health Services Atul Goyal had formed a committee of experts in this regard. This committee was entrusted with the task of framing India’s OTC drug policy. Sources say that the draft has also been submitted by the committee. A list of over-the-counter medicines has also been given. There is no such rule in India yet.

A drug is considered OTC if it is not prescribed for prescription only, although there is no set rule regarding this. The government is trying to increase the availability of essential medicines by bringing it under the ambit of regulations.
