NITI Aayog: India's economic and social disparity increased in last three years

Wealth and Social Inequality to Increase in India Between 2020-21 and 2023-24 This has come to light from the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) report released by NITI Aayog. The SDG India Index report reviewed India’s performance based on 17 SDG scales set by the United Nations (UN).

According to this, India’s overall score in reducing inequality has fallen from 71 in 2018 to 67 in 2020-21 and 65 in 2023-24.

Uttarakhand and Kerala have emerged as the best performing states in NITI Aayog’s Sustainable Development Index 2023-24. Bihar has performed worst. Through this index, NITI Aayog assessed progress on social, economic and environmental parameters.

Performance has improved with significant progress in poverty alleviation, work, economic growth, climate change and access to opportunity. On these parameters, Uttarakhand and Kerala emerged as the top performing states with a combined score of 79. This is followed by Tamil Nadu with 78 points and Goa with 77 points at the second and third positions.

On the other hand, Bihar is at the bottom with 57 points in this index. Among the worst performing states, Bihar is followed by Jharkhand (62) and Nagaland (63). Among Union Territories, Chandigarh, Jammu and Kashmir, Puducherry, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Delhi are included in the top 5 states.

Releasing the report, NITI Aayog CEO BVR Subramanian said, ‘Government interventions have helped India achieve improvement in 16 goals set as Sustainable Development Goals.’

The government hopes to achieve some of these goals before 2030, he said. The SDG index shows that out of the 16 goals, India’s overall performance is below 50 points only on the gender equality target.

According to the report, looking at the overall score, the performance of all the states has improved. States’ scores ranged from 57 to 79 in 2023-24, an improvement from 66 in 2020-21 and 57 in 2018. Uttar Pradesh has been the fastest changing state in 2018 and 2023-24.

In the fourth edition of the SDG India Index, the progress of all states and Union Territories has been assessed on the basis of 113 indicators.

The SDGs consist of 17 goals and 169 related targets, which are to be achieved by 2030. Of these, target 13 (climate action) has improved significantly, increasing its score from 54 to 67, the report said. At the same time, Goal 1 (Poverty Eradication) is also close and its score has also increased from 60 to 72.
