Navratri 2023 Day 5: The fifth day of Navratri is dedicated to Goddess Skanda Mata, who is another form of Goddess Durga. People worship this form of Maa Durga on the fifth day of Navratri. There are total nine forms of Maa Durga and people worship these forms with pure dedication and devotion.
Origin:
When Goddess Parvati became the mother of Lord Skanda (also known as Lord Kartikeya), Mata Parvati was known as Goddess Skandamata.
Skanda Mata is in the motherly form, she is extremely pure, compassionate and divine super power who bless her devotees with the wish fulfilment and she never let her devotees returns empty hands.
Navratri Worship:
Goddess Skandamata is worshipped on the fifth day of Navratri.
Governing Planet:
It is believed that the planet Budha is governed by Goddess Skandamata.
Details:
The complexion of Goddess Skandamata is Shubhra (शुभ्र) which describes her white complexion. Devotees who worship this form of Goddess Parvati get the benefit of worshipping Lord Kartikeya. This quality is possessed only by Skandamata form of Goddess Parvati.
Navratri 2023 Day 5: Story
The meaning of ‘Skanda Mata’ is the mother of Lord Kartikeya, who is known as Skanda. Once, there was a demon named Tarkasur who penanced Lord Brahma and asked for boon for being immortal but Lord Brahma denied by saying that nobody can escape from death and Tarkasur played smart and asked for death from Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati’s son as he thought that Lord Shiva is detached from everything, practiced austerity and he would not get married ever and Lord Brahma blessed him with the boon he wished for. After this Demon Tarkasur started demolishing the universe knowing that he is immortal.
All the deities went to Lord Vishnu to sought his help then Lord Vishnu revealed that Parvati, the incarnation of Goddess Sati is the daughter of King Himalaya and she is destined to marry Lord Shiva. Then Lord Shiva got married to Goddess Parvati and Lord Kartikeya was born.
Seeing his great skills and strength to fight against demons, Lord Brahma appointed Lord Kartikeya as the commander in Chief of gods then Lord Kartikeya killed the demon Tarkasur. Since then mother Pavati is glorifed with the name Skanda Mata.
Pooja Samagri:
the Puja samagri- Desi ghee, diya, flowers or vermillion, kumkum, chunni or dupatta, ganga jal, home made sweets, paan, supari, laung and elaichi.
Navratri 2023 Day 5: Puja Vidhi
1. Wake up early in the morning and wear clean clothes before commencing the rituals.
2. Sprinkle gangajal all around before starting puja rituals.
3. Light a diya with desi ghee and offer vermillion and paan along with elaichi, supari and 2 laung.
4. Chant Skanda mata mantra and other mantras mentioned in Durga Saptashati.
5. Recite Durga Saptashati Path.
6. Devotees must offer bhog prasad and chant Durga Maa Aarti before breaking the fast.
