Milk

is a very important ingredient in our daily life. Milk is included in the diet of everyone, from children to the elderly. But how safe is the milk you consume?

A shocking case has recently come to light regarding the safety of milk. A report has been filed in the Delhi High Court. The report claimed that oxytocin was being used in milk supplied in Delhi. This drug has been banned by the central government in 2018. It was then claimed by the government that it was being misused on animals to increase milk production. Due to which it is having a bad effect on the animals as well as the milk drinkers.

The central government had banned this drug in April 2018. At this time, it was said by the government that it is being used wrongly on milk-giving animals to increase production. After that, the Delhi High Court has directed the authorities to take action against the wrong use of oxytocin in dairies keeping cows and buffaloes in the capital Delhi. The court said that administering hormone-related drugs is cruelty to animals and is also a crime.

A bench headed by Acting Chief Justice Manmohan directed the Delhi government’s Drug Control Department to conduct weekly monitoring and take cognizance of the cases. The police will investigate the matter. The court has asked the Delhi Police’s intelligence wing to trace the sources of oxytocin production, packaging and distribution. Also instructions have been given to take action as per law in this case. The court passed the order while hearing a petition filed by Sunayana Sibal and others regarding the status of dairies in the national capital.

At this time, the court said that because giving oxytocin is cruelty to animals and is also an offense under Section 12 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. This Court therefore directs the Drug Control Department GACTD to conduct weekly monitoring and take cognizance under Section 12 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 and Section 18 (a) of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act in all cases of misuse and possession of Oxytocin.
