We know that ancient Egyptian culture was very skilled in medicine and surgery like Vedic. But now a new research has expanded their knowledge even further. Thousands of years old copra found in research shows that the ancient Egyptians knew about cancer and tried to treat it.
An international team of researchers studied two skulls that are thousands of years old. The aim of this study was to find out how prevalent cancer was in ancient times and how the society of that time would have treated it.
“The ancient Egyptians could treat complex head fractures, but cancer was at the frontier of their medical knowledge,” said Tatiana Tondini, lead author of the study.
The two skulls under study belong to a 30-year-old man and a 50-year-old woman who lived between 2687 and 2345 BC and 663 and 343 BC respectively. Microscopic observation of one of the skulls (skull no. 236) revealed signs of neoplasm. Apart from this, more than 30 small and round shaped cancerous stalks were observed on the scalp.
But the most shocking thing is that the marks of sharp metal weapons were found near these knots. From this, the researchers speculate that the ancient Egyptians may have tried surgery on cancer. Evidence of two more ancient wounds has also been found on the same skull. One of the wounds appears to have been caused by a violent incident at close range. The healing of these wounds means that the person may have received treatment and thus he/she may have survived.

All these evidences found point the direction of further research on cancer treatment methods in ancient Egypt. In the future, the research in this field can reveal the role of ancient Egypt in Ayurveda on cancer, said the main author of the research, Prof. Edgard Camaros said.
