• Guru Poornima marks the birthday of Veda Vyasa, who composed the four Vedas, composed the epic Mahabharata and laid the foundations of many Puranas.
• With his main deity form, philosophy, and yogic path as his guru, Veda Vyasa developed the foundation of Hinduism as it survives to this day.
• Ved Vyasa is said to have used Ganesha as a scribe. This means that his teaching was not merely composed on a human level but was embedded in the universal mind. Ganesha rules the organization of all higher knowledge.

• The day of Gurupurnima is especially important for another reason. On this day Lord Shiva as Adi Guru taught seven sages who were well versed in the Vedas. It indicates that Lord Shiva is the form of Omkara and all divine words and cosmic sounds originate from Omkara.
• In the Yoga Sutras, God as Pranava or Om is said to be the progenitor of yoga. Reflecting the power of this sacred time, Lord Buddha is said to have given his first sermon at Sarnath on this day.
