Laapataa Ladies Review: Grief of losing a wife and then... Laapataa Ladies with a social message along with humor

Few women directors like Meghna Gulzar, Zoya Akhtar, Kiran Rao have created a ring for their name in Hindi cinema. His films are diverse and of a different cut. His style of direction is unique and his choice of subject matter is also different.

Aamir Khan Production’s Kiran Ravan Directed Lapata Ladies has a unique subject and setting. Interestingly, Aamir Khan, Kiran Rao and writer Biplab Goswami have given a good slap to the producers and directors who are currently in love with remakes and sequels through this film.

Although the story of this movie is fictional, it is entertaining as well as social message. The film touches on various social issues such as the practice of paying dowry which is still going on in some places…, allowing girls to become self-reliant and live according to their ideas… and also to emphasize the importance of education for the bright future of girls.

The story of this film revolves around the bride and groom. Deepak (Sparsh Srivastava) is on his way to the village with his bride i.e. Phul (Nitanshi Goyal). In the same train in which he is leaving, there is another newly married couple. As it is the wedding season, the brides are wearing burkhas (face veils) as per their custom and this causes chaos.

Deepak comes to his house and is shocked when his wife’s veil is removed from his head. Because he has brought someone else’s bride home instead of his wife. Her name is Pushpa (Pratibha Ranta). Then Deepak starts searching for his wife. While searching, he goes to the police station and reports that his wife is missing. A police officer (Ravi Kishan) starts investigating in his own way.

Then where and how does Deepak’s wife live…who is this Pushpa and whose wife…how does the police investigate this etc. the answers to the questions will be found only after watching this movie. Director Kiran Rao has presented this light hearted story in a humorous manner. She has taken great care not to overdo the preaching while touching on various social issues. Kudos to Kiran Rao and his team for that.

Importantly, the story of the film has been well woven without big stars or big sets. Actor Sparsh Srivastava, Ravi Kishan, Nitanshi Goyal, Pratibha Ranta, all the actors have performed amazingly in this movie.

Sparsh played the role of the innocent and naive Deepak perfectly. The joy of getting married, followed by the sadness of losing his wife and then his heartbreak to find her has been beautifully captured by him.

Nitashi looks very beautiful in the role of Phool. Pratibha Ranta has made her silver screen debut with this film and she shines in her debut. Bhojpuri superstar Ravi Kishan has done well in the role of a police officer. The dialogues in the film are hilarious.

Credit must be given to Divya Nidhi Sharma. Though the film lacks romance and action, the story is well woven. That makes the film engaging. Although the music in the film is not very catchy, it is better to ignore it due to other good things. This humorous story carries a social message.
